On Tuesday 10th March 2020, Spalding United played Chasetown in the final home league game of the season before covid hit. A 0-3 loss was watched by 94 spectators.
Fast forward 6 years a play off semi final, a marquee, cold beers on draught and Dj Nick T banging out the tunes. 2,038 supporters made their way into the Sir Halley Stewart.
The club has come a long way but all that mattered on the night was the next 90 mins. Ironically, it was 29 April 2023 when Halesowen beat us in the play off final at The Grove to deny us step 3 football. The pain we felt that day needed to be put right.
The Yeltz, always well supported, were noisy down the town end but with our supporters matching them our Tulip boys in blue didn't let us down.
Ceesay, who slipped when well placed, should have had us in front in the first half and when an almighty goalmouth scramble second half the ball was deemed by the match official to not have crossed the line - Halesowen hung on.
Jack Roberts started to cause problems down the right and on 75 mins he got it in the right area and this time Ceesay didn't miss - the roar was heard the other side of the Welland!
Dan Wilks now certainly wasn't going to let anything in and he and the back four stood strong. 6 mins added on time seemed endless but at the full time whistle the ground was bouncing!
Now only one more hurdle to cross before National league North is a reality .............
